It’s been a few months since we have been to a show and I am so excited about going to Tryon International for their first ever Indoor Series in a few weeks.
I am a planner and therefore I am already thinking about what I need to make sure is packed in the show trunk and grooming box. You can’t be Hamster’s manager without being prepared at all times, right?! 🙂
My trunk and grooming box are organized into two different parts. One part is for horse and one part is for rider. For rider (me), I like to have two pairs of gloves (schooling and showing), a crop, various sets of spurs, extra hairnet, chapstick and SPF, a baseball hat, water, Rescue Remedy pills (seriously), cash, Equi-Clean wipes for my boots, my phone and a phone charger. In my tack trunk, for the horse, I like to have grooming and bathing supplies, fly spray, treats, towels, earplugs, extra earplugs, boots and polos, poultice, liniment, Equi-Clean wipes for horse boots and tack cleaning, an extra schooling pad, cooler and Perfect Prep tubes. In the show-side groom box, for the horse, I like to have a towel, treats (bribery), fly spray, Pony Glam hoof dressing, ear plugs (in case one pops out somewhere), Equi-Clean wipes for touch ups and a finishing spray to get off schooling ring dirt and bring out the serious shine.
To help me in my process I decided to ask my nearly 12,000 Instagram followers for their show packing advice. Without question, the number one response was some sort of wipes! I have used baby wipes in the past and they definitely work well in a pinch. For my Horse Glam blog, I was sent Equi-Clean Grooming Wipes. They are essentially “horse-sized” pre-moistened baby wipes (24×16 inches), which makes them perfect for the show with just one large wipe lasting you a good 24 hours or more. We would keep one wipe in the tack room and another at the show ring. The second most popular response was baby powder, or a similar sock whitening agent. Nothing beats baby powder if you have to fake it! However, I usually feel so rushed at the ingate that I avoid the mess of baby powder when I can. I really like using Myst Dry Shampoo. Spray it into your rag or stiff brush, apply some elbow grease and your horse will be clean and shiny. The third most popular response was some sort of alcohol for nerves. This was sort of funny (and sad at the same time) and I made a mental note to delve into it more deeply for a subsequent blog post!
