Step 1. Find the unicorn(s).
When selecting the perfect unicorn model, do not limit your possibilities to the typical white unicorn. Unicorns can come in all different shades…some of which are much easier to keep clean than others, if you get my drift. Additionally, the calmer the unicorn the better. A unicorn that is primarily motivated by food is also a big plus.
Step 2. Secure a good location.
It doesn’t matter how cute your unicorn and little human are together, your magical picture will be ruined if it is captured in front of a manure pile or dirt paddock. Look for greenery or a pretty landscape to provide you with the perfect backdrop.
Step 3. Plan your scene.
When I think of unicorns, I think of flowers, rainbows and pretty pastel colors. I picture a very whimsical setting. For my picture, I used an array of fake flowers, a teepee from the Land of Nod and a custom dreamcatcher crib mobile. I used a faux fur rug from Ikea and lots of pink and gold accent pieces. Embarrassingly, 95% of these items came from my home!
Step 4. The outfit and accessories.
For my unicorns, I used faux horns from Etsy and flower garland necklaces from Hobby Lobby. Logan also wore a matching pink pastel Etsy flower headband and a pink, ruffly romper. Brown leather moccasins by Freshly Picked tied perfectly into the whole teepee/dreamcatcher theme.
Step 5. Bribery.
Bribery is probably the most important step. You can have the best setup ever, but it won’t turn out well if your unicorn is not cooperating and/or you are not proficient at photoshop (ie, cropping yourself trying to hold a wild unicorn still out of the photo). For my picture, I was ambitious and had three unicorns to control! Luckily, as mentioned in Step 1, they each were highly food motivated. I was able to place little piles of grain on the ground and they, for the most part, stayed put long enough for us to snap the pictures!
Thanks for reading this fun blog post. These images were used as party invitations for Logan’s first birthday, which was unicorn themed!
