“What’s your dream horse?” This is the question I’m sure every horse-crazy little girl got as a child. There’s no way I can be the only one. I’ve thought long and hard about this one simple, yet intrinsically deep question. If money and geographical location were not an issue, what dream horse would you have?
Ever since I could read I would skim all the horse-related books (with pictures) and learn about all of the different breeds that I could. Anybody who knows me personally, knows I’m an absolute sucker for the American Paint horse, but have you ever seen a Gypsy Vanner?
My reply was always “a Gypsy Vanner” and most people had no idea what I was talking about so now I’m here to break down this absolute goddess-sent breed of a horse.
I think what first drew me to this breed was its magical name, Gypsy Vanner, followed by the horse’s stunning locks of long hair. I’ve always been intrigued by the gypsy’s nomadic lifestyle and when I learned that the gypsies selectively bred this breed in Great Britain to pull their caravans I was immediately in love. I mean, have you seen those old-time gypsy caravans with the decedent paintings on the inside? Now imagine that with a team of beautiful Gypsy Vanners harnessed to it!
It wasn’t until 1996 that they actually made their way into North America and when they arrived they had no name for the breed. Because they were used by the gypsies to pull their caravans their name, Gypsy Vanner, was born. Um hello, how cool is that?!
Facts About Gypsy Vanners
Here are some more interesting facts about the breed:
- They are stocky in their build like a draft horse, but only stand around 14-15 hands tall
which makes them usable to most disciplines we see today. They are often referred to as
“people-sized draft horses”. - They have a temperament that is gentle and friendly.
- They can come in absolutely ANY color! The breed is not limited to the color pallet
spectrum. - They have long flowing feathers that grow behind their knees and down to their hocks
and a magnificent mane and tail to match!
If you have some downtime available I suggest checking out this beautiful breed if you have never seen them before. To me, they are as stunning on the outside as they are rich in history. Maybe one day when the stars align just right, I’ll be able to have one of my own to add to my herd.
What is your dream horse? If you’ve never been asked until now, do some research, see what’s out there, and get back to me. You may stumble upon a breed that makes your heart flicker just like the Gypsy Vanner does for mine.
