For many people, the New Year is a time to reflect and look towards the future. It is pretty cliché, but many people make goals to go to the gym, eat healthier, ask for the raise at work, travel to a new place, etc. However, resolutions often fizzle out and easily become a mere thought that could never become reality.

The top three reasons for this according to forbes.com include:

  1. It’s your consciousness that needs to change before your behavior can change
  2. You don’t have an accountability structure to help you sustain change
  3. You are actually scared of, and completely resistant to, achieving this big goal and you won’t let yourself

I am here to tell you that there are ways around this. One of the most fun and creative ways to channel your inner resolutions and goals is to create a mood board.

A mood board can include anything you want it to have. For example, if you want to travel to London this year, you can include an image of London, a suitcase, an airplane, etc. The options are endless for what you want to include.

Equestrian goals are also a great thing to include. You could even make a separate mood board just for your goals in the equestrian sense. For example, do you want to move up a level? Or Maybe you want to be able to hack out on your own. For me, I want to go down centerline with my tails. A goal I have been looking to obtain for years.

This brings up another good point. Goals do not have to be something you need to achieve this year, or even the next. Goals can be 5 years, 10 years or even a week from now. It is important to keep this in mind when creating a mood board because the way you organize it will allow yourself to understand the timeline that is appropriate for each goal.

The next question you may ask is where do I make one? Well, there are a lot of options for this as well. If you want a good craft, you can rip out the good ole paper, scissors, glue stick and markers and get at it with printing images, drawing or going through magazines/newspapers to find what you are looking for.

Another good option is canva.com, which offers a free or premium subscription to make anything you want. When you get to the website, select a blank poster size which will allow you to insert different fonts, images, clipart and backgrounds. The nice thing about Canva is that you can access a lot of different stickers, download any images of your own and access cool fonts.

If you are digitally savvy, another way you can create a mood board is to use Photoshop or InDesign where the options are endless in terms of using photos, fonts, gradients and other design techniques.

Above is the mood board I created for myself. It may not make much sense to you but what is important is that it makes sense to me. No one else has to be able to understand it or clearly see what you are reaching for, other than yourself.

You can include graphics, images, words or phrases, a personal color scheme or quotes. But continue to think outside the box, anything goes for your mood board.

So remember when creating a mood board:

  • get creative
  • make design decisions that make you happy
  • remember that any goal is possible, so include it!

After you have finished your mood board it is time to place it where you will see it the most. My go-to is making it my computer background because I am on my laptop every day. You can also print it out and hang it in the kitchen, on your bathroom mirror, at your work office, etc. By viewing your mood board every day it will aid in your consciousness making a shift towards understanding what you really want to achieve and it will allow you to not fear being successful towards these goals!

Share below your creations and let us know where you display it every day!!

Devyn I Trethewey

One thing I know for sure is that my passion is equestrian. I have spent my whole life riding, grooming and shaping my future to incorporate horses, somehow. I discovered in college how to combine horses with writing and social media and I enjoy every minute of it. When I am not writing or riding, I am most likely on the beach, probably thinking about horses.
